Extensive flooding across Nan; one fatality

The flood situation in Nan province remains critical due to the continuously rising water level of the Nan River.

A levels reached a staggering 8.83 metres in Nan city last night, well surpassing the critical threshold, causing the water to overflow the flood barriers and inundate homes, shops, roads in the city centre, and nearly the entire area in front of Nan Hospital.

The 38th Military Circle has deployed personnel and flat-bottom boats to assist the public—particularly in evacuating bedridden patients and the elderly from their homes to the Dhevaraj Hotel, which has been designated a temporary shelter.

Additionally, the rising water of the Nan River has overflowed the road surface on Sri Boonruang, Nakhon Nan Pattama, Baan Nam Tuan, Ban Du and the Northern Development Bridges, all of which are currently closed.

Chaiwong Wongyai, Governor of Nan Province, gave a briefing at the Nan Provincial Incident Command Center (JIC), reporting that there has been one fatality so far—a person swept away by strong currents while riding a motorcycle through floodwaters in Tha Wang Pha District.

309 primary schools and 22 secondary schools have temporarily suspended classes and five hospitals and medical centres are facing risk of severe flooding, all accelerating evacuation of patients.

Nan River will likely reach its peak water level around midnight tonight, after which the water will begin to recede, entering the recovery and restoration phase.
