Mae elephant camp staff in Mae Taeng district reported on the 10th August that water levels in the Mae Taeng river, which runs through the elephant camp, have begun rising again after previously receding enough to allow clean-up and restoration work in the area.
Staff say they are now on 24-hour standby, monitoring water levels closely given the continued risk of further rises should rain fall in upstream catchment areas. Valuables and equipment have already been moved to safe ground to limit damage should flooding return.
All elephants have been moved to “Noen Lop Chang,” a raised area used as a refuge point, to protect them from the rising river. Staff remain on watch and are prepared to move the elephants further if conditions worsen.
Rain clouds were reported over Mae Taeng district this evening with rain likely overnight, so the care team continues to monitor the situation and has contingency plans ready in case of heavy rain or a rapid rise in water levels. All elephants are currently in safe, elevated ground, with staff maintaining round-the-clock watch.
