Police in Chiang Mai have tracked down a man who filmed himself racing down Doi Suthep on an electric unicycle, a clip that went around social media and left plenty of people wondering who exactly was going to get flattened.

Viewers who saw the video complained that the stunt, done at high speed on the mountain road for content, was an accident waiting to happen for anyone else using it, and asked officials to look into it.

On Oct 19, Phuping Ratchaniwet Police Station moved quickly after the backlash. Station chief Pol Col Sinothai Lilittham ordered an immediate check, and officers soon found the rider in the clip: a man identified here by the pseudonym “Chai”, from San Sai district. The unicycle was seized as evidence, and he has been handed to investigators to face legal action.

Police used the occasion to repeat a reminder to residents and tourists alike. Electric unicycles and electric scooters are not allowed on public roads, they said, since that breaks the land traffic law and invites serious accidents, particularly on steep stretches and sharp bends.

Anyone who spots dangerous riding, or groups gathering to film stunts and disturb the neighbourhood, can report it to the 191 hotline or 053-211750, which are staffed around the clock.
