The sale comes after Malaysia suspended imports of Thai shrimp earlier in the month over concerns about residue contamination, a move affecting shrimp farmers in more than 20 provinces. The Commerce Office sourced over a tonne of fresh vannamei shrimp from central Thailand farms, averaging 41-45 pieces per kilogramme, to be sold both via pre-order and on-site.
Doors opened at 9am, and within two hours more than 800 kilogrammes had already sold, with the full stock expected to be gone by lunchtime. The sale forms part of a wider effort to help shrimp farmers find alternative markets while the Malaysian suspension is investigated.
Anyone who missed out gets another shot: the farmers’ market at the Chiang Mai government complex on 3rd July (9am-12pm), the flower market in front of Nim Si Seng Co Ltd head office on 22nd-24th July (9am-12pm), and Khuang San Kamphaeng on 6th-8th August (4pm-7pm).
