A female cow made a break for freedom in central Chiang Mai on the afternoon of Thursday the 22nd, bolting from a slaughterhouse near Chiang Mai Gate and taking refuge in a massage shop in the area. Residents, worried she would be hit by a vehicle or damage nearby property, managed to contain her inside the shop while police from Mueang Chiang Mai Station coordinated with the owner.
The cow was visibly distressed throughout, with tears streaming from her eyes, according to locals. The slaughterhouse owner eventually arrived with a truck and a tranquilliser gun, and the animal was sedated and returned to where she had fled from. Onlookers, moved by the scene, were overheard saying she had escaped her fate — though as it turned out, not quite yet.
A young woman who had witnessed the ordeal contacted the owner and offered to buy the cow’s freedom. The owner set the price at 14,000 baht. She paid it.
