There are currently no lockdown measures in place in Chiang Mai province, announced authorities. Covid-19 is now considered an endemic disease, with outbreaks following a pattern similar to seasonal flu.

Dr Waranyu Chamnongprasat, Chiang Mai’s Provincial Public Health Chief, released data on the Covid-19 situation in the province covering 1st January to 9th September 2026. A cumulative 4,549 cases have been recorded, a rate of 252.89 per 100,000 population. No deaths have been reported.

Mueang Chiang Mai district recorded the highest infection rate at 616.70 per 100,000, followed by Sansai (446.70), Doi Saket (382.53), San Kamphaeng (364.31) and Hang Dong (340.75).

By age group, working-age residents made up the bulk of cases: 799 patients were aged 30 to 39, followed by 784 aged 20 to 29, and 642 aged 60 and above.

Dr Waranyu noted that the Ministry of Public Health removed Covid-19 from its list of dangerous communicable diseases and reclassified it as endemic, effective 1st October 2022, with outbreaks now resembling seasonal flu patterns.

He urged the public to maintain personal preventive measures to limit spread, particularly around vulnerable groups (the so-called “608” group — those with chronic disease, the elderly and pregnant women) and in crowded settings such as schools and factories, where symptom screening before entry is recommended. Anyone with clustered or severe symptoms can use ATK tests for initial assessment.

The five recommended preventive measures are:

  • Wear a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, and immediately if experiencing symptoms such as coughing, sneezing or a runny nose
  • Wash hands frequently with soap for at least 20 seconds, or use alcohol gel
  • Avoid touching the face, nose or eyes, and avoid touching the mouth, with unwashed hands
  • Maintain distance from those showing respiratory symptoms
  • Eat freshly cooked, hygienic food, use serving spoons and keep spaces well ventilated

The public health department also recommended regularly cleaning shared surfaces such as door handles, stair rails and lift buttons, and advised anyone with flu-like symptoms — fever, cough, sore throat or congestion — to isolate at home, limit contact with others and seek medical attention if infected.
