If you are interested in working with the πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ British Embassy and being their eyes and ears on the ground in Chiang Mai, facing a wide range of challenging, yet often rewarding, scenarios – they would love to hear from you!

Some of the things that you will be responsible for from day to day;
– Engaging with the Chiang Mai local authorities and collating critical information to assist the Embassy during times of crisis or major events.
– Forming strong liaisons and relationships with the local Thai authorities.
– Working closely with the Consular Team in Bangkok regarding consular support for British Nationals in Chiang Mai. Sometimes being first responder to urgent cases, such as a victim of crime or the arrest of a British National, when tasked by the Consular Section.
– Occasionally accompanying consular staff on prison, hospital, home or airport visits to vulnerable British Nationals.
– Providing the Consular Team with on-the-ground updates during their regular volunteer network meetings.

Desirable qualifications, experience and skills:
– Experience of living in, or understanding of the United Kingdom, British people and culture.
– Previous experience in consular services or another support organisation.
– Knowledge of Chiang Mai and the British community of expats and visitors.
– Experience of working in challenging, stressful situations, demonstrating a high level of resilience.
– Excellent communication skills, approachable, empathic with enhanced customer and listening skills.
– Flexible, resilient, patient and able to deal with difficult situations, including working unsociable hours in an emergency.
– IT proficiency – Using MS Teams, Office, Outlook and ability to learn FCDO systems.
– Ability to travel within Chiang Mai and neighbouring provinces.
– For candidates with English as a second language, certification at IELTS (or equivalent) level 7 minimum or higher within the last 2 years is required. All skill areas (Writing, Speaking, Listening and Reading) must be IELTS score 6.5 or higher.

It is suitable for flexible working patterns, as you may be called upon at short notice and during unsociable hours, but hours should ideally not exceed 4 hours per week.Β 
No salary, accommodation or relocation expenses are payable but an annual Honorarium is awarded. Approved travel and general expenses incurred on consular business will be reimbursed. You will get a chance to work closely with the British Embassy, to access a wide range of training opportunities and make a real difference as part of the busiest UK Consular section in the world! You will also be invited to attend certain Embassy events, such as the King’s Birthday Party, Consular Contacts Party and ad-hoc conferences.

The position once approved will require accreditation from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
