In the early morning at Chiang Mai Gate Market, Buddhist monks can be seen standing and waiting for people to offer them food, instead of walking on alms rounds as is customary. Each monk remains in place until his alms bowl is full, then transfers the food into a bag and continues standing until late.
Local residents reported that monks have been collecting alms at Chiang Mai Gate Market for many years. Yet, it remains unclear which temple they belong to. Some monks appear to be focused solely on receiving offerings.
Many people feel uneasy about this behavior, considering it inappropriate. Although reports have been made to the relevant authorities, no action has been taken so far.
Aree Phanchan, Director of the Chiang Mai Provincial Office of Buddhism, explained that this issue concerns Buddhist discipline and does not violate any laws. While the office has no authority to take direct action, it can report the matter to the Lord Abbot of a Buddhist monastery. Meanwhile, the Ecclesiastical Governor of Region 6-7 (Dhammayut) stated that the situation falls under the responsibility of the governing clergy, who are expected to intervene and issue a warning. The behavior is considered improper and may result in disciplinary action.
