The mayor and representatives from network organisations an announced that this year’s Yi Peng festival, which is the Northern version of Thailand’s Loy Kratong festival, will involved many activities this year put on by authorities. There will be a large parade through the city with 25 floats, there will be lights and decorations throughout the city to add to the festive ambiance, there will be the annual Miss and Mr Yi Peng competitions, there will be light and sound shows featured by the river, there will be competitions for kratong making, lantern making and other crafts. Communities and homes will be encouraged to decorate their entrances with the ‘soon’ traditional banana leaves arch. Numerous religious ceremonies will also be held throughout the period which will include animist ceremonies such a s asking forgiveness from the river. There will also be numerous ‘check-in’ spots around Chiang Mai to please visitors and locals.
Rescue staff will be on standby near all 17 main spots where people release lanterns along the river for safety. Citylife will post full details of these events and the schedule when we receive it.
