Chiang Mai Zoo has introduced a one-month-old female capybara called Fiaw Fao, who is already the favourite of visiting crowds, along with four other newcomers in its “Zoo Junior” line-up, ahead of the long weekend of October 23 to 26

Zoo director Wutthichai Muangman led a walkthrough of the new arrivals today (October 22). Under the “Zoo Junior” banner, the zoo is showing off rabbits, sun conures, pygmy goats, capybaras and a baby giraffe.

The giraffe calf was born on September 7 to father Ton Khun and mother Dao, with older sister Luna looking on. The zoo says the calf is healthy, and visitors can find the family in the Africa zone.

The capybaras, though, are the main draw. Two newborns have joined the family, a group the zoo calls the “poker face gang”, and Fiaw Fao is one of them.

To show how the animals respond to training, Wutthichai used a clicker to call the capybaras, and they filed out of their enclosure in a line to the front of the exhibit. Dinner was waiting: a khantoke-style spread of food arranged to spell out “capybara”, laid on for the newcomers. The zoo says the demonstration is meant to encourage natural behaviour and give the animals a good experience.
