The Chiang Mai Provincial Public Health Office is closely monitoring a new situation where monkeypox had been found in the province. Officials are providing information to the public to help with self-monitoring and prevention. They empathise that monkeypox is only serious for those with weakened immune system and that the public should not be alarmed, merely informed.

Dr. Waranyu Jamnongprasartporn, from the Public Health Office, reported that a total of 26 monkeypox cases have ever been found in Chiang Mai ever 2025 with four new cases identified this year. Most patients have been between 21 and 47 years old. No deaths have been reported so far. The virus spreads primarily through close contact with infected individuals, particularly those who have rashes, blisters, or sores.

The main risk factor is intimate or sexual contact. The risk of transmission from casual conversation at close range for a long duration is considered quite low. People who have been in close contact with suspected monkeypox cases are advised to monitor themselves for 21 days. Symptoms to watch for include skin rashes, fluid-filled or pus-filled blisters—especially in the genital and anal areas—fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.

If these symptoms appear, it is recommended to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis. All hospitals in Chiang Mai provide monkeypox testing free of charge. Test results are typically confirmed within 1–2 days. Infected individuals will receive treatment at a hospital or be placed under home isolation.

Dr. Waranyu also recommended five keyways to protect yourself from monkeypox:

  1. Avoid close contact with anyone showing signs of a rash or skin lesions.
  2. Practice caution with sexual activity, especially with unfamiliar partners, as this is a major risk factor.
  3. Maintain personal hygiene, regularly washing hands with soap or alcohol-based sanitizers.
  4. Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or bedding.
  5. Be extra cautious if you’ve recently travelled from countries in Central or East Africa or the Middle East.

While awaiting test results, individuals should separate their personal belongings such as towels, bedding, eating utensils, and avoid close contact with others. Wearing a face mask when near others is also advised.
