Chiang Mai Provincial Police have launched a drone patrol unit to support checkpoint operations, deploying the technology to monitor suspicious vehicles, track cars that turn back before reaching a checkpoint and intercept those attempting to evade stops. Phu Phing Police Station began operations immediately on 15th June.

The deployment follows the launch of a tactical training programme on 11th June, opened by Region 5 Police Commander Lt Gen Kritthapon Yeesakorn and attended by 411 officers. The programme covers Six Man Team tactics and drone patrol operations, aimed at preparing police for increasingly complex crimes including hostage situations, drug cases, VIP protection and armed incidents.

Chiang Mai Provincial Police have procured 40 drones for deployment across police stations and the Criminal Investigation Division, with a dedicated “drone patrol” curriculum developed to support crime prevention, investigation and traffic operations. The 2 million baht programme was funded by the Chiang Mai Police Savings Cooperative.
