The much anticipated Chiang Mai Performing Arts Festival (CMPAF) is back, this time partnering up with the The Asian Youth Theatre Festival (AYTF) to offer the city a plethora of performances from November 19-24 – all for free!

This year’s festival, which will take place citywide in public and popular venue locations, invites 150 artists from over 14 countries. And, after much anticipation, the full schedule of free shows and workshops has been released!

The event promises a unique melting pot of talent and perspectives shared through the medium of shows and activities, including theatre productions, street shows and cultural exchange workshops.

The 2024 festival will feature two main programs: the AYTF will highlight youth voices and creativity, connecting young, emerging artists across Asia, while CMPAF brings performances from seasoned artists, both local and international, into the spotlight. The festival not only aims to share theatre and performing arts with new audiences, but also inspire and nurture the future of performing arts in the Asia region.

With “Changing Climates” as this year’s theme, CMPAF promises 24 live performances across community spaces, giving audiences an accessible and enriching experience. Kids and young adults can also get hands-on in free workshops that explore performing arts and build skills in a friendly, collaborative environment.

Performers this year include international groups like Gigi Art of Dance from Indonesia, Stages Theatre Group from Sri Lanka, Khmer Art Action from Cambodia, and many more from around Asia and beyond. Local groups include Lanyim Theatre and Glom.

Theatre enthusiasts and passing tourists can also enjoy street performances and open stage events at Thapae Gate and other public areas. There’s doubt that this is a very rare opportunity to see global artistry right here in our beloved Chiang Mai.
