Chiang Mai Municipality turns Chang Moi into open-air street art gallery

Chiang Mai Municipality has launched an initiative to transform the Chang Moi neighbourhood into a creative arts and culture zone, offering a designated space for street art. The move follows earlier complaints about unauthorised graffiti appearing on public walls in the old city, and the municipality has opted to channel that creative energy into a formal programme, inviting artists, young creatives and the public to showcase work in designated public spaces. The initiative falls under the concept “Chang Moi, clean canal, beautiful street”.

Chang Moi Road has a long history as one of Chiang Mai’s important trading streets, linking the city centre with Kad Luang market and reflecting generations of local life and culture. The redevelopment aims to preserve this identity while adding vibrancy through contemporary art, giving local artists a platform to share their work and creating space for exchange between artists, the community and visitors. Organisers say the initiative should also support the local economy, benefiting small businesses, craft shops, cafes and creative ventures, while helping establish Chang Moi Road as a distinctive street art landmark and cultural attraction for Thai and international visitors.

Artists, creatives and members of the public interested in joining the project or presenting their work can contact Chiang Mai Municipality for more information.
