Chiang Mai is leaning further into its creative future with the launch of “THE KING OF CHIANG MAI E-SPORTS 2026,” a major esports event positioning the city as both a digital content hub and a destination for next-generation tourism.
The opening ceremony took place on Saturday 9 May 2026 at Chiang Mai Hall, Central Chiang Mai Airport, presided over by Chiang Mai Vice Governor Boonlue Thammathoranurak. Organised by the Chiang Mai Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports, the event reflects the province’s broader ambition to strengthen Chiang Mai’s image as a global creative tourism destination supported by a thriving digital ecosystem.
According to Ittirat Sinarak, Director of the Chiang Mai Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports, the tournament forms part of the province’s Chiang Mai Wellness City strategy, which aims to expand sports tourism through emerging lifestyle industries such as esports. The initiative is designed to connect younger audiences and digital talent from across Thailand with Chiang Mai’s evolving identity — one that blends innovation, creativity, and quality of life.
More than just a gaming competition, “THE KING OF CHIANG MAI E-SPORTS 2026” also serves as a showcase of the city’s readiness to support the wider creative economy. Alongside tournament finals for RoV, Free Fire, and EA SPORTS™ FC Online, the event features interactive experience zones, robotics and technology showcases, digital lifestyle exhibitions, financial literacy activities, and educational sessions focused on future-facing innovation.
Organisers say the event aligns closely with the growing “event economy” model, helping stimulate local businesses, create opportunities for young people, and attract new groups of investors and travellers interested in digital culture and creative industries.
The event runs from 9–10 May 2026, bringing together public and private sector partners in a collaborative effort to position Chiang Mai as a city moving confidently towards a sustainable, innovation-driven future.
