Imon has arrived to conduct a technical evaluation mission assessing the readiness of “Chiang Mai, Capital of Lanna” for nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As part of the mission, the expert delegation visited the Cultural Heritage Information and Exhibition Centre at Khum Chao Burirat, which houses information on the bid’s eight key heritage sites: Wat Jed Yod, Wat Umong Suan Buddha Dhamma, Wat Suan Dok, Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan, Wat Chedi Luang Woraviharn, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Ratchaworawihan and the old city’s moat and walls.
The bid’s central argument rests on Chiang Mai’s status as a living cultural landscape — a historic city that has preserved its heritage intact while remaining a functioning urban centre where residents continue their daily lives, reflecting an unbroken continuity between past and present. The technical evaluation mission continues its site inspections from 4th to 8th August.
