Chiang Mai has issued its first urgent weather warning of the season, alerting all 25 districts to prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall between the 14th and 18th of May 2026, with risks of flash floods, forest runoff and waterlogging across the province.

The warning comes as the Thai Meteorological Department officially declared the start of the rainy season on the 15th of May — noting that this year’s season is opening with heavier rainfall than usual.

Deputy Governor Siwakorn Buapong has directed all district offices and local administrative bodies to monitor weather conditions closely, with particular attention to high-risk areas including hillside slopes, waterways and natural tourist attractions such as waterfalls and streams. In the event of sustained heavy rain, authorities are instructed to alert residents and tourists immediately, close off hazardous areas without delay and have temporary shelters, food, drinking water and essential supplies ready for those affected.
