Chiang Mai International Airport, together with security agencies and other relevant sectors, held a full-scale emergency exercise (CEMEX-26), Chapter 2, simulating an “armed attack or act of sabotage and arson” for 2026. The drill tested response procedures and readiness to bring emergency situations under control.

The exercise was attended by Chiang Mai Governor Rathapol Naradisorn and many officials.

The airport noted that threats to aviation worldwide have grown more complex, with sudden, high-intensity incidents such as active shooter events and new forms of attack becoming more frequent. The exercise was designed to simulate a realistic scenario to test command systems, inter-agency coordination and speed of response under crisis conditions.

The scenario simulated an armed assailant inside the domestic terminal. Airport security staff carried out an initial response and activated the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to direct area control, evacuate passengers to safe zones and coordinate the handover to security forces for area clearance.

CEMEX-26 forms part of the airport’s ongoing testing of personnel readiness and communication systems against standard criteria, aimed at protecting the lives and property of airport users while maintaining Chiang Mai Airport’s operational standards in line with requirements set by Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAT) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
