Tourist Police and officers from Mae Ping Police Station arrested a 38-year-old Canadian man on a rape warrant this morning, catching up with him in a Chiang Mai hotel room just before he was set to leave the country.
The case began when the British consulate in Chiang Mai contacted police on behalf of a British tourist who said she’d been sexually assaulted. According to her account, she’d been out socialising with a group of friends, including the man later named as a suspect, and they’d been drinking together before the assault happened.
She reported the incident to Mae Ping police, who gathered evidence and arranged for her to be examined at a hospital before taking the case to court for an arrest warrant.
Police are withholding the suspect’s full name, identifying him only as “Avdo.” Checking his phone, officers found travel records showing he was booked to leave Thailand early on the morning of September 23rd. That sent them scrambling to track him down before he could get to the airport, and they caught him in his room.
He’s now in the custody of Mae Ping police, who say the case will proceed through the courts.
