A Border Patrol Police teacher in Mae Hong Son was flown to Bangkok today after a firecracker exploded in her face, the national police chief ordering that she get the best care available.

Pol Lt Col Bunyanut Phongitsawarannan, deputy spokeswoman of the Royal Thai Police, said today (October 28) that Pol Gen Samran Nuanma has taken a personal interest in the case of Pol Cpl Nareerat Pairotniyomchai, a teacher at the Ban Ko Pae Border Patrol Police learning centre in Mae Sariang district.

On October 24, villagers found a firecracker lying in a stream. Nareerat went to help check it, worried a child might stumble across it first. It went off and hurt her left eye. Doctors at Srisangwan Hospital operated, and this morning the Border Patrol Police Command arranged for a police aviation helicopter to carry her to Police General Hospital in Bangkok for further treatment.

Nareerat is 26 and teaches at the centre under the 33rd Border Patrol Police Sub-Division in Mae Khong subtown. She is also a former pupil of the same school, part of the 19th batch of its “teacher heirs” programme. She went on to Ratchaprachanukroh 21 School in Mae La Noi district and was a student under the patronage of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The deputy spokeswoman said the force admires her teacherly spirit and her courage in walking toward the problem rather than away from it. The police chief has told officials to look after both her treatment and her welfare entitlements in full.
