Residents near the Somphetch Market were alarmed this morning after a body was discovered floating in the inner moat of Chiang Mai’s old city. Rescue workers from the Ruam Jai Chiang Mai Foundation and officers from Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station were alerted before noon today and responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, responders found the body of a man floating. Authorities estimated he had been dead for at least four to six hours before recovery.

The deceased appeared to be around 50 years of age. No identification documents were found on the body. Responders noted a head wound, though no other signs of injury were found on the body. The remains have been transferred to the forensic unit for a formal determination of cause of death.

Authorities believe the man may have been a homeless individual, as the area is known as a regular resting place for rough sleepers. It is thought he may have entered the moat either to cool off or to catch fish, and struck his head on the concrete moat wall, losing consciousness and drowning. The cause of death and the identity of the deceased are yet to be officially confirmed. Police are working to identify the man in order to notify next of kin.
