A tense situation unfolded in central Chiang Mai this morning when an explosion was heard before fire broke out at a bank in the Chang Khlan subdistrict. Firefighters rushed to the scene to bring the blaze under control.

At around 6.30am today (8th June), officers from Chiang Mai City Police Station and city firefighters

mobilised four fire engines to investigate and suppress the fire, which had produced large amounts of smoke at a bank on Sridonchai Road.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames inside the building. It is suspected that the  bank’s UPS (uninterruptible power supply) unit blew up. The blaze was brought under control in 20 minutes.

Nearby residents reported hearing what sounded like an explosion — similar to a transformer blowing — before smoke began pouring from the building, followed by flames. They then called police and firefighters to the scene.
