H Gallery Chiang Mai is very pleased to announce the latest in a series of exhibitions that have emerged from collective experience and mutual influence, as part of the gallery’s on-going commitment to the rich legacy of community-based art projects in the region.

3rd Space Artists and Alex Soulsby

Initiated by the artist-led platform Surface Arts in collaboration with the local institutions Traidhos Three-Generation Community for Learning and Prem Tinsulanonda International School (PTIS), 3rd SPACE is an international exhibition resulting from an artists’ residency program at PTIS from 8 October – 5 November 2013. The artists hail from Germany, Peru, Thailand and the UK and have been involved in a variety of socially-engaged activities throughout their time in Chiang Mai.

The title of this exhibition reflects ideas of change and redefinition, as the artists are three times removed: from home to foreign country to new working environment to the neutral space of H Gallery Chiang Mai. The works on show explore dualities and paradoxes within the frenetic pace of cultural exchange that characterizes our contemporary world. The challenges and delights of geographical displacement, local knowledge, international vistas, and territorial extension is their material.

As a program and an exhibition, 3rd SPACE energizes traditional methods of collaboration and transforms the gallery into a multi-directional place. All the artists hold established portfolios of working as part of networked projects, and 3rd SPACE offers further insights into how contemporary art practices can map diverse trends and changes.

Surface Arts (http://surfacearts.co.uk/) is a UK initiative that builds connections between individuals to produce innovative projects with a view to facilitate on-going exchanges and extend audiences for contemporary art practices.

Director Katie Hawker is based between the UK and Chiang Mai and organized 3rd SPACE in dialogue with Brian Curtin, H Gallery’s curator. Surface Arts have successfully managed many projects in the UK and are now forming links with Thailand.

Traidhos Three-Generation Community for Learning (http://www.threegeneration.org/) is an educational organisation that focuses on sustainability, creativity and life-long learning. Traidhos includes PTIS, one of Asia’s leading international schools, a range of academies and an organic farm. Traidhos is also Southeast Asia’s first Compass School, following an educational philosophy based on the symbolic signs of world orientation.
