While the market itself was built 115 years ago, it was around 50 years ago that the escalator was installed, to what we are told was much fanfare at the time—it being one of the first in the North of Thailand.
Unfortunately after being in operation for only a few years the escalator broke down and there was no budget, expertise nor will to repair nor replace it. The old static escalator has been acting as a rather crusty and unattractive staircase ever since.
However, following a recent survey of vendors, the operators of Warorot Market have learnt that there was a high demand for the escalator to be fixed.
They have just therefore announced, much to the surprise and delight of vendors and shoppers, that within 20 days there will be a brand new escalator in the market.
