CityNews–From March 28th until April 7th, work produced by prisoners at the Chiang Mai central prison will be on display at a trade exhibition at Kamthieng Market yard.

Products for display and show include wood work, furniture, decorated houses, tools as well as traditional Thai homes that are stable, beautiful and relatively cheap. All of the goods have been made by prisoners at the prison. The exhibition began as a means to monitor prisoner behavior but has, recently, been seen more as a venue through which prisoners might hone and improve trade skills.

Pol.Col. Suchart Wong-Anuntchai, director-general of the Corrections Department, said that the products produced by the prisoners are of a high quality and a low price. The prisoners work hard to create work that is beautiful, modern and durable. Moreover, a portion of the proceeds will be used to decrease public expenses on the prison. More importantly, however, this exhibition is seen as an opportunity for prisoner’s to learn skills and produce work that they can be proud of, work that will hopefully allow them to find lucrative work upon release.
