During the Second Indochina War (1959-75), Thailand sent troops to fight in Vietnam.  But between Thailand and Vietnam, in the small country of Laos, a very violent secret war was being fought between Thailand and its U.S. ally and the North Vietnamese and Pathet Lao communists.  What was this secret war, why was it being fought, and why did Thailand commit troops there?  What was Thailand’s role in the war? What was Thailand trying to achieve? This lecture examines those questions from the Thai standpoint. It looks at Thailand’s political and military role and activities in Laos going back to the 1954 and later 1962 Geneva Agreements, and details Thailand’s placing troops in Laos in 1970, which became the Thai military’s largest expeditionary force in its history. Dr. Paul T. Carter lectures and writes on lessons learned from the Second Indochina War, explores lost battlefields, and interviews former warriors. Cost = 200 THB. She gives a very personal account of how those experiences inform her view of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine, of what has shaped Putin, and of what is going on in his head. “History,” an old Soviet joke says, “is very difficult to predict,” a reference to the Soviet era’s changing accounts of history used to justify leadership decisions. It could not be more apt today as Putin fits himself and his ruthless actions into a vision that has disturbing implications for the whole world. 200 THB Register online on our website: www.lllpayap.com
