Her Royal Highness Somdej Phra Sri Nakarindra Baromraj Chonni, the mother of the late King Bhumipol Adulyadej passed away in 1995 at 95 years of age. For the millions of Thais who followed her daily activities on the news, she was mostly known for her great love of her son as well as her hard work and dedication to the nation. She was also a foodie. She would carry dried shrimps on her person in a personal container, and always had to have fresh chilies on-hand to add to her favourite – chili dips. She loved fried rice with shrimp paste or rice with fried basil for breakfast and one of her favourite snacks was pork rind. She was known to pop into the kitchen from time to time to do her own cooking and when living in Switzerland, was said to have been a master at making crepes.
