According to the 16th May report by the Chiang Mai Municipality, approximately one tonne of durian waste is collected from Muang Mai Market daily since the durian season began. In addition to durian, the amount of biowaste within Chiang Mai Municipality area has increased dramatically since the start of the current City Pillar Festival which will continue on to the 17th. It is reported that there are about 15 tonnes of flowers, candles and incense waste from the traditional flower offering.

The municipality is now preparing to produce fertiliser at Rama IX Lanna Park from these biowaste which reportedly will take about six months. The fertiliser will be distributed to local communities for free.
