Pol.Maj.Gen Pacha Rattanapan and Pol.Maj.Gen Montri Samboonyanon presided over the meeting that was attended by representatives from Taxi companies and the ubiquitous Red Songtaews of Chiang Mai, among others.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by all parties, which promised to improve customer services and more strictly regulate pricing.

The government is currently trying to improve the image of public transport in Thailand which often gets bad press for charging too much for a journey, refusing to use the metre and refusing to accept passengers and/or dropping them off before they reach the destination.

The MOU also stated that drivers should wear smart uniforms, be polite to tourists, and to stop refusing passengers.

In addition to the MOU, the taxi companies of Chiang Mai have asked to increase meter prices to the same rates as Phuket. 2 kilometres; 50 Baht, 2-10 kilometres; 10 Baht for each kilometres after that 12 Baht per kilometre.

The current rate in Chiang Mai is 2 kilometres; 40 Baht, 2-10 kilometres; 6 Baht per kilometre, more than 10 kilometres is 10 Baht per kilometre.

This request has been filed with the department of land transport and is awaiting review.

They also noted that there are more and more Chinese drivers in Chiang Mai, resulting in lots more road accidents. They suggest the government implement a law that ensure people who bring their own cars into the country must insure them to avoid payment problems.
