Man Facing Murder Charges after Fatal Hit and Run in Chiang Rai

CityNews – Chiang Rai police have arrested a man after a hit and run caught on CCTV was widely shared online showing a pickup crashing into and then dragging a motorcycle with two passengers almost 40 metres before fleeing, killing one and injuring another.

Charnnarong Krongrab, 38, was arrested on September 20 after police identified the pickup’s licence plate through at CCTV image.

The video, that caused an outcry on social media, shows Charnnarong pull out of a club late at night, hitting a motorcycle carrying two people. Despite the driver of the bike bashing on the hood of the car, Charnnarong accelerated, dragging the passenger under his pickup. The passenger was caught in the axle and dragged almost 40 metres before coming loose. The passenger trapped under the car was killed and the bike driver was also injured in the incident.

The woman killed in the incident was identified as 20 year old Netikan Taota.

Charnnarong fled the scene and by the next morning had already replaced his pickup’s front bumper. After his arrest, he admitted to driving the pickup and told police he fled because he was afraid of being attacked by the bike driver and his friends.

Charnnarong is facing charges of murder and reckless driving causing death and injury, and failing to stop after a road accident.
