Ivory Crackdown Begins

CityNews – Following the new law requiring all citizens to register any ivory in their possession, hundreds of people in Chiang Mai and Lamphun have come forward to register their items.

Each household is allowed up to 12 items. So far the largest piece has been 18 kilograms.

Should anyone fail to report their ivory, they could face a fine of up to six million baht, three years in jail or both. No household is allowed to posess more than half a kilogram of ivory. Any persons trading in ivory must request a permit from the government.

All African ivory is illegal. Thailand is one of eight countries with an illegal ivory market.
