In the early morning of August 24, a gang of six men on motorbikes were caught on CCTV breaking into a room in an apartment block near the Rattanakosin intersection, and escape three minutes later. At 8am the owner of the apartment discovered the body after entering the room.

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Sai Ya Ngin, a Burmese national living and working in Chiang Mai.

After studying CCTV footage and asking local residents, the police were able to identify some of the attackers. On August 25, two men were arrested. A 19-year-old man named Cham was arrested at the Morakot Hotel where he was hiding. A 19-year-old Burmese man named Wun was arrested in San Phee Sua.

Once arrested, both men independently verified that they were the attackers. They told police that Sai Ya Ngin had brought a mobile phone from one of the men but said he would pay for it at a later date, but kept refusing to pay. As a result the men broke into his room and tried to steal the phone back but Sai Ya Ngin fought back so they stabbed him with knives and a broken bottle until he was dead.

The four men on the run are believed to have left Chiang Mai. Police are currently tracking them down.
