Tengoku de Cuisine is a household name here in Chiang Mai, known for its fine Japanese restaurants in Tha Sala and Nimmanhaemin. There is, however, another unique third branch of this brand way out in the lush green fields and rolling mountains of Mae On district, which is well worth the lovely drive to visit. Set on 20 rai of landscaped gardens, with ponds and lakes dotted about, this property is surrounded by a ring of lush mountains. There are old Thai style private villas infused with warm Japanese accents to stay in, should you wish to make a getaway weekend out of it. The restaurant also grows its fresh vegetable produce on-premises at the organic vegetable plot, which you can wander through.

Tengoku De Cuisine, owned by Sun Suebsaeng, is considered one of the top ranking Japanese restaurants in Chiang Mai since it serves authentic Japanese cuisine with both a la carte and buffet menus, all at reasonable rates. Each dish uses only the best ingredients and both owner and chef regularly visit Japan to source the best produce as well as to keep abreast of authentic flavours.

Start off with the cooked tuna mixed with miso sauce and mustard, a full-flavoured opening to any good beal, before digging into the restaurant’s most acclaimed dish, the nasu dengaku, a 120 year old recipe from Kyoto of miso-grilled eggplant, all sweet and cameralised to perfection. The beef tataki is also a crowd favourite, with slithers of prime sirloin served in a ponzu sauce of apple cider vinegar, shoyu, mirin and lime. And if you like some sea food try the flame-grilled Hamachi which arrives crispy and fragrant.

All of the above dishes are just some of those offered in the buffet menu, which is served a la carte style at the table, but offers a set selection of the restaurant’s best dishes. The buffet also includes a hotpot of beef or pork with a number of soups to choose from, so you are guaranteed a full stomach! This coming winter, Tengoku De Cuisine will also prepare premium grade beef, and seafood for grilling under the cool atmosphere in a special price of 1,000 baht per set.
