Indian Community Donates to Border Police Division

In 2004, the former President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development to HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in New Delhi. Her Royal Highness graciously provided financial assistance from the prize money received for this award (Rupees 25 lakhs, approximately THB 1.25 million) to establish the Indira Gandhi Award Border Police Patrol School (IGABPP School) in 2007.

The IGABPP School is located in Ban Pakashe village of Om Koi District in Chiang Mai province, on the Thai-Myanmar border (about 240 kilometers from Chiang Mai city). It is perched at a height of 1000 meters above sea level and caters to the educational needs of 100 students belonging to the Karen Hill tribes of Ban Pakashe village.

In 2013, in an initiative taken by the Consulate of India in Chiang Mai, the Embassy of India in Thailand provided funds of THB 300,000 for the construction of a dormitory for women teachers.

Recently (January 22, 2018), HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and representatives from the Consulate of India, as well as the Indian Community of Chiang Mai visited the IGABPP School and provided further assistance in the form of ration and supplies.

At the time, the Principal of the school Mr. Teerasak Kaavmon had informed that most of the tables and chairs being used by students of the school had become damaged and out of order. Accordingly, a proposal was initiated jointly by the Indian Community of Chiang Mai and the Consulate of India in Chiang Mai to raise funds for meeting this requirement. In June 2018, 100 desks and chairs were successfully procured from M/s Rachen Furniture, Chiang Mai with a generous grant from the Embassy of India in Thailand and donations contributed by the Indian Community of Chiang Mai.

The first set of desk/chairs was symbolically presented to the Principal of IGABPP School during the 4th International Day of Yoga held in Chiang Mai University on June 17, 2018. The remaining desks and chairs are being delivered on July 9, 2018 from the Border Police Division 33 HQ in Sansai, Chiang Mai. The handing over was done by Shirish Jain, Consul of India and Ranjeet Singh, President of Indian Community, Chiang Mai (and several other Board members of the Indian community association) in the presence of Col Vangpreecha of Border Police Division 33, his lady wife Khun Orapim and other senior officers of the division, as well as Ajarn Maneet of Budhasthan, Chiang Mai
