New National Policy Concerning Launching of Rockets, Lanterns and Fireworks

CityNews – 18th October 2016, The governor of Chiang Mai invited local administrative heads to a meeting to discuss the latest rules set by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) concerning the national policy regarding the launch or release of fireworks, lantern and balloon releases.

Balloons (khom kwan) can be launched on Loy Krathong Lek Days between 10am-12pm.

Lanterns (khom loy) can be released over three days:
1. Loy Krathong Lek days between 7pm to 1am only.
2. Loy Krathong Yai days between 7pm to 1am only.
3. New Year’s Eve between 7pm to 1am only.

Fireworks can be set off during candle lighting ceremonies, Loy Krathong and New Year’s Eve between 7pm to 1am.

As to the annual rocket festivals between March and July, villages may launch rockets between 1pm to 5pm only.

However, private events wishing to launch any of the above, must first receive permission from local authorities first. Anyone caught breaking these rules will face up to three years in jail or a fine not exceeding 60,000 baht.
