CityNews – The funeral of Pongthep Kamkaew, 40, one of the three cyclist who died following a drunk driving incident last week was held at Wat Sanluang, of Chiang Mai’s Sansai Luang district. Friends and family as well as 50 cyclists from Sansai were among the mourners who joined the funeral procession.
After the funeral, the 50 cyclist continued on to attend the funerals of the other two victims, Saman Kantha, 62, which was held in Sansail Luang sub-district and Chairat Yonglan, 63, in Nongchom sub-district.
Following the incident, the governor of Chiang Mai declared that Chiang Mai had already created measures to ensure safety of cyclists in the city and would work towards an even safer environment in the future.
The ‘Slow City’ campaign, which limits the speed of vehicles around the moat to 40 kilometres per hour, will be expanded to turn some roads into 100% bicycle lanes on certain days. This month will also see the first standardised lanes dedicated solely to joggers and cyclists along the Irrigation Canal Road from the Chiang Mai International Convention and Exhibition Centre to Huay Tung Tao Lake.
