Continuing the Legacy of Thai Vegetarian Cuisine by Pata Obasan
We are proud to be part of the new generation that continues the legacy of Thai vegetarian cuisine by Pata Obasan. Her lifelong dream has always been to make healthy food accessible to all — food made with clean, safe ingredients from trusted sources, rooted in the deep artistry of Thai cooking, and entirely plant-based.
About Pata Obasan “Obasan” (meaning “auntie” in Japanese) is the name affectionately given by her many Japanese students who traveled to Mae Taeng to learn from her. Known across international media for her Thai vegetarian cuisine, Pata chose a reclusive path of spiritual practice. For over 30 years, she cultivated her own garden, created nourishing plant-based meals, and offered daily alms at Wat Sukjai, a temple she helped establish.
Chef Nong Panithi Jantayasakorn A devoted student of Pata, Chef Nong is a former Bangkok socialite who turned to country living during the COVID lockdown. She built Baan Buabahn, a colonial white farmhouse in the middle of rice fields in Chiang Mai, where she grew vegetables, raised animals, made ceramics, and experimented with self-sufficient living. Her journey led to a renewed passion for Thai cuisine — especially vegetarian — and eventually to the founding of Sukjai together with Pata.
