CityNews – Crowds gathered to witness the annual Pu Sae Ya Sae ceremony in Mae Hia this morning.
Despite the rain, thousands of people gathered at Ban Pa Chi, Mae Hi this morning (May 28th) to witness the annual spirit worship ceremony known as Pu Sae Ya Sae.
During the ceremony a medium is taken over by a local spirit and eats from the raw carcass of a buffalo that has been sacrificed for the event. The story goes that giants in the jungle used to eat the people but they were convinced to eat only one buffalo each year that would be sacrificed by the locals.
Over 3,000 people attended the event according to event organisers.
The event used to be one of the most significant ceremony of the Lanna Kingdom, where royal and nobility historically attended.
