The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Chiang Mai Setting up 4 New Branches

CityNews – Komsan Suwannaampa, the head of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Chiang Mai, has announced that they are ready for any eventualities which may emerge during the winter of 2013/4. Issues which they are monitoring include fire, smog and drought. Each district has been tasked with creating a disaster prevention plan. 


Chiang Mai has a population of 1,655,642 persons, and in the past around 188 subdistricts, encompassing 1,864 villages, 289,553 households and 689,752 people have been affected by winter related disasters. In the past year, these people required upwards of half a million pieces of cold weather protection gear, though they only received 99,991 pieces. A private company, Thai Beverage, donate around 15,000 pieces a year which go to Mae On District. 

Four new branches of the department will be set up in Chiang Mai, and a total of 30 new branches set up nation wide to help alleviate these problems.

CityNews – To help prevent excess breeding of street cats and dogs, the Chiang Mai Municipality will set up a service to neuter these animals at the Chiang Mai Municipality Neuter Centre (former Ban Den Health Centre).

Only residents of the municipality can use this service and all they have to do is simply register their intent and number of animals requiring the service.

The steps involved are:

  1. Register intent and number of animals
  2. Wait for a response which will take two days
  3. Do not feed or water animals for up to 8 hours prior to appointment
  4. Bring to the centre at the time allocated.

Interested parties can register at the Department of Public Health and Environment, Chiang Mai Municipality or call 053 259 136 during government working hours.
