With Chiang Mai currently confirming 1,873 people with the Covid-19 virus, the city’s normal bustling Songkran trade has come to a near standstill.

Vendors at Warorot Market are seen in these photographs spending the day waiting for crumbs of business, many reporting 10% of normal sales this time of the year.

“I understand that no one can help anyone anymore,” said one vendor, 45. “We all just have to help ourselves and do what we can to survive. There are no authorities or officials to turn to. It is about economic survival as well as survival from the virus.”
