Stations silent as fewer trains leave for the south

There were a few passengers stepping onto the train heading to Bangkok from Chiang Mai Train Station this afternoon, far fewer than normal. This will be the last train to Bangkok on the normal schedule for the foreseeable future, as the State Railway of Thailand will be shutting down many services nationwide as of tomorrow.

From six trains per day departing Chiang Mai for Bangkok, there will now be only two: the 8.30am and 5pm trains.

Today there were fewer than 20 passengers taking the overnight train to Bangkok, with a handful more passengers standing at the ticketing booth waiting their turn to cancel their tickets.
