CityNews – After an increase of accidents involving school buses in Chiang Mai, the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Office have declared that all drivers must be registered and their buses checked for safety by July 31 or risk arrest if caught after that date.

The decision was made under the Safety Project meeting on June 17. The meeting focused on road safety control, safe driving techniques, care of school childrenĀ on the road, and rules for school bus drivers.

Between now and July 31, 2016, buss drivers will be able to register with the Land Transport Office and will be issued with an official ‘school bus’ sticker for their truck or bus.

They will also be able to register on weekends and public holidays to ease the pressure on the drivers who have to drive students to and from school on regular weekdays.

Not all bus drivers attended the meeting, and many have yet to register.

According to the Land Transport Office, anyone who does not register but continues to work as a school bus driver will be punished under relevant laws.
