CityNews – A candle lit event to mourn the passing of the late King His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej was held over this weekend with thousands of Chiang Mai locals and visitors attending to pay their respects and to light a candle.
The Royal Anthem was sung by those who joined and 35,000 candles were lit around the moat to pay respects to HM the King.
The event was held on two consecutive days, 29th and 30th of October, starting at 7.19pm.
A large number of the Lanna candles also lit at the event were placed in a large number nine, the number that is associated with the late King who was King Rama IX.
An 89 second silence was also held on each of the days before the Royal Anthem was sung, led by a chior of 89 singers from Chiang Mai University.
The Minister of Tourism and Sports presided over the event and lit his own candle during the event. The Lanna candles were then released around the moat simultaneously.
The moat was covered in 35,000 beautiful shimmering candles floating peacefully on the water.
A photo exhibition was also on display over the weekend, inviting visitors to bring in their personal images of the King to show. Free health checks, food and drinks were also provided during the event.
