“Chiang Mai municipality has been working on food safety continuously,” said the mayor.  We want our street and market foods to be safe because now up to 90% of food sold is not grown or produced within our municipality so we have to be more diligent in checking standards.

Research has shown that around 30% of vegetables currently sold has traces chemicals, some are harmless, but others not. We also have been drawing blood to check levels of enzyme cholinesterase and found them to be acceptable with only 20% at dangerous levels.

Constant oversight has resulted in marked improvements in overall hygiene and safety of food in Chiang Mai.
