Chiang Mai Mayor Campaigning Against Plastic

CityNews – Tassanai Buranupakorn, Mayor of Chiang Mai, visited Warorot and Siriwattana Markets today to explain the necessity of a ban on lanterns and plastic bags over the upcoming holiday period.

Tassanai Buranupakorn, Mayor of Chiang Mai, visited Warorot and Siriwattana Markets today, 26th September, to explain to vendors the necessity of a ban on lanterns as well as plastic bags over the upcoming holiday period. To reduce waste over this busy period, the mayor requested all vendors to use cloth or biodegradable bags and containers, also talking to many market goers to try to raise awareness over his concerns.

The Governor of Chiang Mai Supachai Iamsuwan told reporters that he and the mayor were following edicts from the prime minister’s office to reduce the use of plastic and foam across Thailand. The campaign in Chiang Mai started with 16 markets but will move into communities as well as schools and universities.

Each day Chiang Mai produces 330 tonnes of garbage and the mayor has pledged to start campaigning to reduce this number, especially plastics and foams.
