CityNews – CM108 reported on 23rd December that around 11 a.m. on the same day the Chiang Mai Police reported that a man stole a 15-inch high Buddhist statue named Jao Por Pratu Chiang Mai (Chiang Mai Gate Guardian) from its shire at Chiang Mai gate and dumped it in the moat, just around 10 metre from the shire.

A Thai Buddha statue, which is sacred to Buddhists.

A witness said that he saw a 40-something year old man riding a bicycle around the shire but they thought that he was just exercising. Then the witness heard a sound of something was dropped into the water and saw a suspicious sack sinking below the water.

Some nearby people gathered to retrieve the sack and found that it was the stolen Buddhist statue. The police assumed that the man should be someone who lived in the area and are still looking for him.
