Chemical leak set alarms off at Maharaj Hospital

CityNews – On September 19th, a press conference was held to address a chemical leak which occurred the previous evening at Maharaj Hospital. Asst. Prof. Wichai Churnchongkolkul, MD, director of Maharaj Hospital stated that the chemical substance was sanacide – R8  used in sanitising medical machine and equipment. It has similar compound with vinegar but more intense.

The leak is sourced from a hemodialysis unit. A tube used during diluting the chemical accidently disconnected. Hence, the leak. The hospital announced that the situation was not fatal and there is no injury as the chemical would only cause strong smells and irritate the eyes.

Currently, the area affected by the leak is closed off and patients have been evacuated. The hospital has reached out to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to assist in cleaning up the substance.
