CityNews – Phuket experienced a massive anti-drug sweep in the centre of the town on Friday 21st February 2014. The sweep saw 62 people arrested and facing various charges, from possession to orders of rehabilitation if the suspects have no prior drug-related charges.

The 180 police officers were instructed by Phuket Governor Maitri Inthasut to set up four road blocks which administered urine tests to over 700 people. 57 of them tested positive for illegal substances, mostly ya-ice (crystal methamphetamine) and yaba (methamphetamine pills).

Some of those who were arrested have the option to voluntarily go to a rehabilitation centre at their own cost, or otherwise face jail time.
