Tens of thousands of Buddhist faithful and tourists gathered on the evening of 30th May at the Khruba Srivichai Monument for the annual Tiao Khuen Doi tradition, walking in procession up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep ahead of Visakha Bucha Day.

Chiang Mai Governor Rattaphon Naradit presided over the ceremony, bearing royally bestowed bathing water and triple robes donated by His Majesty the King, which were placed on a ceremonial palanquin vehicle. Accompanied by Lanna-style offerings and a procession of representatives from government agencies and organisations, the column set off on foot from the Khruba Srivichai Monument, covering approximately 11 kilometres to the temple.

On the morning of 31st May — Visakha Bucha Day itself — once the royal palanquin reached the Naga staircase at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, monks descended to receive alms offerings, with the merit dedicated to His Majesty the King. The bathing water was then used in the ceremonial bathing of the temple’s sacred relics.
