Video footage circulating on social media has sparked widespread criticism after some participants in this year’s Tiao Khuen Doi tradition were filmed riding on the roofs of red songthaews on the road up to Doi Suthep — in some cases scrolling on their phones while perched on top of moving vehicles.
Tens of thousands of people took part in the annual night walk on 30th May, trekking 14 kilometres up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep ahead of Visakha Bucha Day. While most travelled on foot, some hired songthaews for the journey — and a number chose to ride on the roof rather than inside.
The Doi Suthep road is narrow and winding with steep bends, and at least one person was reported injured after falling from a vehicle, according to the Ruam Jai Chiang Mai Foundation. Authorities have urged the public not to repeat the behaviour, during festivals or otherwise.
